Poetry and Emotion
Poetry is about emotion. About taking your heart and placing it in somebody elses beating chest, creating a one identity, a new heart.
Poetry isnt math. Or science. Or astrophysics. It cannot abide logic. Much less be as technical as setting up an air-conditioned.
Its sole purpose is to fail understanding.
A poem cannot have a universal meaning because everyones heart beats to its own rhythm.
Those who put mechanical understanding before emotion fail in the long run and will not be remembered, nor their poems.
Human memory is based upon feeling. Care. Love. Affection. Hate. Envy. Relief. Those make us humans. Man and woman feel akin to flesh. Veins. Body warmth.
Our descendents will never ever look for a machine, or a machine like explanation, to find a sense of humanity.
A poem is a comrade. A friend that makes you feel. Or helps you feel. Or helps give name to what you feel. Or, lacking a name, a sense that you do not have those feelings alone. You are part of something bigger.
So poetry that puts anything else before emotion in its interpretation fails. In the present. And future.
Those poets are working in the void for the void. They are not working for their fellow human being. Maybe its zen poetry.
But I doubt it.
